Utilizing open source technology from Linux and Untangle we have created a router based solution with the ability to take over all firewall capabilities and more. The system has the ability to create a bottleneck right at the point where Internet connectivity is connected to a local network of PC’s and servers. Although “bottleneck” is probably not a good description, it is at this point where all data coming into and out of a network into the Internet is scanned for viruses, malware, spam, and sites are checked for their ability to be shown within the network. Ports are blocked and locked down and intrusion monitors are in place to observe any suspicious activity within the network coming from the outside.

It is also at the point of connectivity that the Open VPN server can be installed to allow more secure connectivity from the outside into the network by individual clients or even whole satellite offices. VPN connections are totally encrypted and standard protocols are utilized to better secure these connections from prying eyes. 

The system has the ability to use older/outdated generic hardware creating a  new use for systems that have been retired and preventing them from going into landfills. Keep in mind that this is a fully working and active firewall/filter system so more powerful resources are still used to reduce the true bottleneck that can occur with these types of systems.
